1.Quality housing services make a huge contribution to community resilience.
A combination of higher living costs and lower benefits are putting normal life out of reach for thousands of social housing tenants. Unsurprisingly we’re also seeing an across the board increase in mental health issues. Almost one in three drugs overdoses in Europe were recorded in the UK as the continent’s rate of drug deaths rose for the third year in a row, according to the European drugs agency.
According to The Breaking Free Group http://www.russellwebster.com/uk-drug-report-2017/
Drug-induced death is the fifth most common cause of preventable death among 15- to 49-year-olds in the UK.
Heroin is involved in the majority of deaths
Drugs in the UK have a higher level of purity and a lower cost than almost anywhere else in Europe, including countries with lower than average income levels, and higher than average living costs.
UK drug related deaths accounted for 31% of those recorded in Europe in 2016.
The next most prolific death toll was Germany at 15%
Those working in welfare, care and housing, will already understand the value of insight into the effects of addiction but experience tells me this is no longer limited to those with obvious social care requirements.
The majority of drug related deaths now occur in men aged between 30 and 49. Probably a legacy of the 90’s drug culture, this is currently afflicting many affluent and outgoing adults. A clear indication that this is no longer a kid thing.
And whilst opiate use is alien to many of us, I’m confident that someone you know will freely admit to drinking an entire bottle of wine between home and bedtime, even on school nights. Alcohol misuse is still the biggest risk factor for death and disability among 15-49 year-olds in the UK. Despite all the evidence, many of us continue to collect a bottle of the single worst health risk along with our groceries.
Do you need to know more about the signs, symptoms and side effects of drug use?
Does your welfare or HR team have the skills they need to support and motivate those with addiction issues?

Happy, and healthy individuals build happy and healthy communities.
Which is why Embrace created the Well-Being Ecosystem.
It goes without saying that home and community have a profound effect, for better or worse, on the way we perform at work.
Which of us hasn’t experienced times when worrying about family has challenged our ability to concentrate on the jobs we get paid to turn up for?
We’ve been privileged to work with organisations who take pride in their commitment to building healthy workplaces and in having a positive social impact on the communities around them. They know that economic well-being lays a great foundation for personal well-being. They also know how important it is to have a healthy and therefore more engaged workforce.
We know that communities need employment opportunities
and individuals need reliable work.
The Wellbeing Ecosystem is our unique way of supporting our partner’s initiatives and saying a big thank you for their contribution to our success story.
Every Family has an impact on the community they live in.
Good mental and physical health can’t be taken for granted, and not everyone can be an expert in staying well, which is why we developed our friendly, helpful and entertaining Resilience and Wellbeing learning modules.
Embrace use the profits generated from subscriptions to our health-related modules to provide free courses to young people, community groups and unpaid carers.
If you’re an employer who would like to get involved in the Wellbeing Ecosystem or a Community Group who would like to access free health and well-being learning for your members, please go to
Apparently, lonely people of all genders are more likely to feel slightly less lonely after a conversation with a woman than a man.
Which made me wonder, is that because women are great listeners or good talkers?
There is something about the way women interact, something in their willingness to listen while others offload and an instinctive curiosity about emotional triggers that makes me think it could be true.
This lovely little infographic better describes the behaviour of practised conversationalists than great listeners.
It’s about interacting rather than listening alone which I think is what my female friends are especially good at. My Girlfriends will be delighted to know that for me they mainly epitomise trampolines – not sponges – that’s you Mrs B.
If your social circle includes 5 or more supportive buddies you should count yourself lucky.
If not you should probably think about devoting a little time to nurturing these life enhancing relationships because another less flimsy bit of research told me they can help you live longer.
